index page project for the online okchakko translator

Today we are launching a project on github to write a better index page for the okchakko translator project.

The current index page is located at the following address.

This index page gives online free access to the translation from French to Corsican, a language threatened with extinction.

The current index page has several defects:

  • it is basic, rather crude in its design on a white background
  • the source-text and the destination-text should be aligned horizontally (like Google translate, Deepl, etc.) and not vertically

The index page index.php will be published under the MIT license.

Your contributions are welcome. You can help this project by proposing a better index page that the current one of the okchakko project (a priori in php).

Update to priority pairs for endangered languages

If we were to update the priorities for language pairs to be achieved, from the point of view of endangered languages, the result would be as follows:

  • Corsican language: French to Corsican (already done)
  • Sardinian Gallurese: Italian to Gallurese
  • Sardinian Sassarese: Italian to Sassarese
  • Sicilian: Italian to Sicilian: sicilian language is close to Corsican sartinesu or taravesu
  • Munegascu: French to Munegascu: munegascu language bears some similarities with Corsican language

Pairs such as French to Gallurese, French to Sassarese, English to Gallurese, English to Sassarese, English to Sicilian do not have priority, as they can be resolved using an intermediate pair. French to Gallurese is done with the French to Italian pair (e.g. with Deepl) and then with the Italian to Gallurese pair, etc.

Priority pairs for endangered languages

Let us discuss the question of priority pairs with regard to endangered languages. It consists of the most wanted translation pairs for a given endangered language, in keeping with the main language with which it is associated. To take an example: French-Corsican is the priority pair for Corsican language. In the same way, Italian-Gallurese is the priority pair for Gallurese language, etc. Now expanding on that idea, priority pairs are:

  • Corsican: (i) French-Corsican (ii) Italian-Corsican (iii) English-Corsican
  • Sardinian Gallurese: (i) Italian-Gallurese (ii) English-Gallurese
  • Sardinian Sassarese: (i) Italian- Sassarese (ii) English-Sassarese
  • Sardinian Logodurese: (i) Italian-Logodurese (ii) English-Logodurese
  • Sicilian: (i) Italian- Sicilian (ii) English-Sicilian
  • Manx: (i) English-Manx
  • Munegascu: (i) French-Munegascu (ii) Italian-Munegascu (iii) English-Munegascu
